That being said I did enjoy him a lot back in the day when he was on Oprah; back in 97 I believe. I think that was the last time I found Oprah to be in the era 'of the people', since then I believe, like you, that she's lost touch and lost part of her soul along the way.

As for talk show's in NZ, I don't think they actually have their own home-grown shows, a lot of it tends to be exports from the US that fills up daytime TV like Oprah, Dr Phil and also Ellen; other than that, nada! Same also applies to Australia, we have a few day time talk shows there more like morning talk programmes but nothing like Oprah which seems to be the leader in her field.

I'd have to say that a large majority of the programming both here and back home tend to lean towards exported US shows such as sitcoms, variety and talk shows which is quite sad because the effect of it 'Americanizing' our own culture is really becoming apparent in our language and the influence it has on today's teenagers. It has taken over their slang, the way they interact with each other and what they wear - it really is remarkable.

Even in terms of government it's evident with both Prime Ministers here and in Australia running off to fight in a war that has nothing to do with us because good old George Bush's influence is so strong. We even receive more news coverage on the US election than we do in regards to our own government, it's kind of sad really.

elisha. wow! i'm honored i was able to keep your a...

elisha. wow! i'm honored i was able to keep your attention as you crossed time zones and borders. i have to say, i'm actually surprised there is "more" of oprah on tv in Australia and NZ than there is in England. and i'm floored by the cost of the magazine. a little hint, if you're interested - many of the articles in the magazine end up on the website anyhow.

i find dr. phil horrifying to watch. i think he's so overbearing and obnoxious, he makes me cringe. however, clearly, he's incredibly popular and my opinion might be in the minority. here in the US, Dr. Phil and Oprah are played hours apart and on completely different networks. i've often wondered if O has purposefully removed herself from the controversy he's been causing as of late.

how does Oprah compare in popularity to NZ talk show hosts?

thanks again for your comments!
xoLO

Funnily enough I'm actually from Melbourne, Austra...

Funnily enough I'm actually from Melbourne, Australia. I started reading your project from the begining while I was living in London but left recently and relocated to Auckland to be with my partner I met over there so, I've followed your blog daily from 3 countries in 3 months!

In London I can tell you that they don't actually screen Oprah, not that I'm aware of anyway although I think it might occasionally be on cable. In Australia it's on weekdays at 1pm in the afternoon and has been ever since I can remember however, I think the episodes are quite a bit behdind yours, we never seem to know what's going to be on or when. We also get O Magazine but because of it having to be exported from the US it costs $20/$25 which I think is ridiculous. I know a lot of women who really want to purchase it but can't justify the cost and I don't blame them, that amount of money for a magazine is crazy!

Since I've been here I've noticed they screen it at the same time as they do on Aust and like there they play Dr Phil at 12pm and Oprah straight after it at 1pm I assume to pull the same audience.

I think Oprah's influence is international, she seems to have the same effect on women here as she does in the US.
