I keep hearing the phrase "The Political Oprah" used to describe Sarah Palin today as the one-time VP candidate is Fox's new shining star. I know Palin really resonates with many women, but to give her the "Oprah" moniker on her first day of work seems like it's jumping the gun.
The moment Oprah made her announcement about leaving her show in 2011, the media began to speculate who might fill her shoes. (In my opinion, nobody. It took decades for Oprah to create her empire, no one can jump into her Louboutins overnight.) But, what do you think - will we witness other talking heads vying to claim her spot?
On to today's show, in brief. I did enjoy the last half of this morning's episode about marriage...I have to go back and watch the first half now. I was surprised to learn that over half the marriages in the world are arranged. I'd like to know how cultures with arranged marriages compare to those without the practice when it comes to divorce rates. Of course, perhaps the accessibility to divorce in the Western world might throw the comparison off. I suppose there is no scientific way to determine happiness as a result of the manner one's marriage occurred, either. Still, when I was single (before I had gotten pretty comfortable with remaining single and satisfied) I played with the idea of visiting a Yenta. I even looked for one in the Chicago area. After watching Fiddler on the Roof, I changed my mind and decided to join jdate.com instead. (And now I'll have "Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match..." in my head for the rest of the day...)
Sorry to be so rushed today. Lots of radio interviews, but I wanted to touch base. For those in the Chicago area, I'll be on Chicago Tonight on WTTW this evening at 7pm. I am excited because I've been watching Phil Ponce for years.
And also, if you're in the NY area, or have streaming radio online - I'll be interviewed by New York Radio's First Lady, Joan Hamburg, today at 1:35p EST on WOR NewsTalk Radio 710! (I take it back! The show just called and they're running a bit late...sounds like we'll be taping the interview later today. I'll let you know when it's scheduled to air. Thanks for your patience!)

Palin as the next Oprah? I'm laughing so hard I can barely type this. What a JOKE!!
Good Christ. As much as I don't care for Oprah she does not give me the cold chill that Sarah Palin does. By God. Ick.
It might have taken Oprah decades to build her complete media empire (i.e. magazine, spinoffs, radio channel, cable channel)& reputation as a taste maker/trend setter but she achieved her status as the highest rated (day time) talk show in America the very first week, if not day, she went national. If anything her North American audience way back in 1986 was probably larger than her North American audience today simply because more watched broadcast television in those days. So whoever becomes the "next Oprah" will also likely to be an overnight sensation, because if you don't have what it takes to grab America's attention in your very first week, you don't have what it takes to be the "next Oprah".
Sarah Palin has a huge advantage in that she's already arguabley the most influential conservative in the world & the most popular republican in America. When Oprah first started she was just an unknown overweight black woman with a goofy name.
The biggest difference between Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey is that Oprah is highly intelligent, well-read, and knows that Africa is a continent, not a country.
Off topic, but did you hear Oprah's comment "Thank God we live in the USA" on Wednesday's show? I like that she does shows that teach us about other cultures, but then why, if she is trying to promote open-mindedness, would she make such an ignorant comment? It's these types of things that really bug me sometimes.
I disagree with this statement (Palin as Oprah) so much that I'm not even sure what to write except: No!
I have enjoyed the shows this week. As a lady gaga fan, I'm especially looking forward to Friday.
Keep rockin at your interviews!!
Re: Marriage
You may want to read Elizabeth Gilbert's new book - Committed. It is truly a cross cultural dissertation on the institution of marriage.
Best,
Gina :)

Hi Robyn,
I was watching The Oprah Effect and you were one of the people they featured. Hearing about your year of Living Oprah peaked my curiosity so I decided to check it out. The very first YouTube video I watched was from Jan. 19 of this year where you were cutting the sizes out of your clothes. If this is what you want to do, fine, but I'm not sure I get this. I understand you were once overweight but you're not any longer. Watching you, you seem like a perfect size and, your casual dress aside at the time of the taping, there's nothing wrong with your looks either. I think you just need to be more proud of ourself starting from the inside out. And forget about anyone you think might be commenting about you; trust me, those very people have issues of their own. Why? Because we're all human and NOT perfect, not even them. So be proud of who you are and what you've accomplished. I truly feel what you've been able to do is phenominal. So own it, live it and believe it!

Okay, so I know this is completely missing the point of this post...but Robyn, I didn't know you were a member of the tribe! (You may have mentioned it before, but I only started reading your blog this past November or so.)
Also, just an FYI, the way I heard about you and began reading your blog was from the snippet of you on MSNBC's The Oprah Effect. I look forward to seeing more of you on TV with all the various interviews you're doing. Oh, and I too am just itching for the day Oprah addresses you/your book/your blog. Thanks for providing us with a thought provoking blog and all the entertainment you bring us.
