And now it looks like there's a space big enough to open one. Oprah is leaving the Windy City and there will be an expansive TV studio with floors perfect for skating. Or at least that's what I'm reading in lots of panicky blogs and articles. I haven't yet read a press release or statement from Winfrey's people about her plans. But...surely if it's printed on the internets, it can't be wrong, can it?
The always lovely Dawn-Michelle (winner of the great baklava challenge earlier in the year) sent me this link about the issue. The first two things that jumped into my brain were: 1) Oh no! Oprah employs a lot of Chicagoans. How will her exit damage the city? Is this like the rise and fall of Detroit due to the automobile industry? Will it hurt tourism? and then I thought 2) Oh no! Now when I travel to foreign countries and I tell people I live in Chicago, they'll no longer say, "Ah! Chicago! Oprah's city! We love Oprah!" (Actually, who am I kidding? I went to Mexico in February and a waiter said to me, "Ah! Chicago! Michael Jordan! I love the Bulls!" True story. Ask Jim. I guess the world is a little behind the times on American pop culture).
Is Chicago's loss LA's gain?

Umm, I hope she is not coming to PA. That's all I need is more hardcore Oprah fans. Ick.
I am REALLY enjoying your book. I will give you a full review when I am done.
Honestly, I can't believe she would have all her dedicated staff here in Chicago relocate their families out to Hollywood. This gossip is probably a negotiating ploy we hear about this every time she negotiates her syndication deal. I hate Celebrity Love Fest Oprah, so I probably won't watch if the show is out in California except for the high profile interviews.
I want to read your book too LO! It's coming out really soon, right?
Upon having learned that I am from Chicago, more than one person here in TO, has asked if I had seen Oprah.
I don't believe Oprah will leave Chicago. She is so effusive about how much she loves this city, and how much she feels Chicago is responsible for her success.
I'm late to your site. But when will you reveal or publish your findings about living the "Oprah Way"?
Celia got an advanced reader copy (complete with typos, grammatical errors, inconsistencies...i'm so compulsive that i can barely stand that people have these! :)) The actual book will be on the stands on January 4th. It's available for presale online (which is nice because it's cheaper).
Just heard from my TV industry hubby that her new digs will be out here in the LA area. That's a shame, I think it was great that she was someplace other than LA...but, since this is TV Land, I guess it's meant to be.
