Well, we knew this day would come. But, honestly, I feel a little sad.
It's been quite a quarter of a century...
I'm left thinking about how formative The Oprah Winfrey Show has been in my life. It started when I was 13 or so and clearly has impacted my adulthood. I'll post more tomorrow about this, since I'm about to put dinner on the table, but I'm looking forward to hearing your reactions.
One thing that is a little weird - Oprah's show will end in 2011. I just saw a huge movie that said the world will end in 2012. COINCIDENCE? Maybe not...
Best to you all!

I just saw the news and came here first. I also grew up with Oprah. My mom watched her every day after we got home from school. Even though I rarely watch I'll be sad to see the show go.
Good for Oprah, though! 25 years is a long time to do the same thing. Even though her ratings have slipped in the last few years her influence is still vast and she's definitely going out on top. I hope she mostly retires and spends some time enjoying herself. She seems to be a very hard worker. I wouldn't be surprised if she became a full-time philanthropist.
I came here first, too! Love her or hate her, it's hard to imagine anyone filling Oprah's shoes. I haven't been this surprised since Johnny Carson went off the air. (I'm a little older than you :-)!)
Hi there!
I just saw you on CNBC, and went straight to your blog. I think this is a truly riveting and fascinating media experiment. Thanks so much for doing something so zany, albeit practical!
Good luck with all of your endeavors!

I saw you on CNBC. I'm not much of an Oprah fan as I can't afford the lifestyle! Kudos to you for this experiment. I'll be looking for your book!
I just saw it also...maybe it's gonna be Oprah/Palin in 2012!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha
I think now is the time that you have to be on her show especially after your book comes out.
Has anyone from Harpo let you know that they know about you and your project?
I just read the artisle...if you already mentioned the impact this will have, she is ending on 9-11 (call emergency)
Hi! I'm watching the Oprah effect on CNBC and saw you speak about your blog. Really cool idea.
Also saw you on cnbc....
You mentioned anthropology for like .3333 seconds, which is so cool! Are you an anthropologist???
I just saw the show on CNBC, and went straight to your blog. The Oprah Effect was magical for you and I am so proud of you! I own a Gourmet Popcorn Store in Texas and I would love to share my Real Cheese Popcorn with you and everyone in your blog. Please visit me at http://www.popcorn-stop.com/
Good Luck on your Book Deal!
I saw that last night. Well you can't fault her for wanting something new. I am just happy that I won't have to listen to people raving about whatever new psychobabble book she said will change their lives.
*sigh* I've been watching Oprah for all of the 25 years, since she was a local Chicago personality! 13 of those years have been daily morning entertainment for me as an At Home Mom. I can't really blame her for wanting a change, she's seemed more guarded lately and just the slightest bit older than her target audience and thus a little bit removed from various cultural trends.
I imagine we'll see her quite a lot on her new network, but probably with more of the Oprah brand and less of her doing a talk show I could be totally wrong! Her announcement airs locally this morning in just a few minutes!
I just read an post stating her and Discovery network might hook up for a show. She will be missed.
Sorry, I just found the link to the post I had read. (http://morningerection.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/oprah-winfrey-to-end-show-in-2011/).
You inspire me because you are common person like so many of us. We all want our dreams to come true but lack direction or opportunity that leads to fullfilling that dream or atleast puts us on that path. I'm so proud of you. You're disapline is inspiring.
Congrats!!!!!
I'm really sad. I will miss her show a lot. Do you think someone else will try to do a similar show? Even if they try, it just won't be the same. :( (I know - I sound so pathetic!)
Really looking forward to reading your book!
Doesn't anyone think it's a little weird that she's ending the show in September, which is usually when she starts her new season? Does that mean she'll be doing new episodes in the summer instead of showing re-runs?
I am not an Oprah fan. I worked out of the house up until 2 years ago and was not home to watch her. When I left work I watched her at first but it didn't take long for me to tire of her. And I am already tired of hearing about her show ending. I wish her well in the future but I know she doesn't need my wishes.
Oh, LO, thought of you and all my internet "buddies" here when I heard the news too.
I understand. She wanted to quit a while ago but felt the burden of history on her. And I think with an African-American president and a quarter century of broadcasting, she feels like those ghosts can rest. That's my take.
But I think about the fun comments here. I think about my father, who adored her show and would turn it on first thing (he worked on school hours so walked in at 4:15 every day) because he wanted to see how "Ofra" was doing. (he was not so good at names.) So I'm with you, Another Jenn, that she's been part of my life for so long, chatting away on the little tv on the windowsill in the kitchen while my family reconnected at the end of our days.
And Courtney Suzanne, I can't wait to hear the story of the date too. It is strange to end when so many are starting.
Here's hoping for a good long year!
it's hard to imagine anyone filling Oprah's shoes. I haven't been this surprised since Johnny Carson went off the air. (I'm a little older than you :-)!)

Oprah is leaving her show in 2011 and many people are predicting the apocalypse in 2012, coincidence?
I want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
And you et an account on Twitter?
