Ok, I am so sad -- I'm out of town this week and had really been looking forward to today's Oprah. I can't wait to watch the recording when I get back to Chicago. Jim kindly set the DVR for me. Yes that's right, I've finally joined the 21st century and hopped on the digital train. One day I might stop using a bird's beak to play records made of stone, too. (Um, that's a little Flintstone humor, for anyone staring at the screen in confusion.)
I was really looking forward to the show because it's a goal of mine to learn how to walk to high heels. Sure they're bad for my feet, my knees, my back. Sure they're uncomfortable. Sure, I once had to wear them in a play and actually tripped onstage and knocked over a chair. (Just one of many reasons I am not usually cast to play delicate, graceful characters). I figure Oprah wears heels almost every single day, she's got to be an authority on how to take more than one step in them without teetering. I don't even WEAR shoes when I work, so I've got a lot learn.
The show looked like fun. Was there good advice?
I'm in NYC this week, in meetings and seminars and such with my publisher. A busy, exciting week for me!

Even Oprah carries her shoes down to the stage for the taping and only wears them when the cameras are on her. Even she is not crazy enough to actually 'wear' them.
But now I know as a "round" woman not to carry a round/hobo bag. "Go with the opposite to your body shape".
But the never-ending question is: can I pull off the over-the-knee boot?
Congrats on the DVR! So sad I missed it too--meant to set the DVR and forgot. Boo, hiss!
You will love not being slaves to tapes anymore!
Leah - I didn't know about the 'opposite' of your body shape bag thing either! Man, I gotta watch the show. Now, as I leave for the day with my bag, flat satchel...should I be carrying something different? Short? Slim? Like a clutch?
Meme - LOL! Thank you for being happy for me, rather than poking fun at being SO behind in this area of technology!
Gah! I just watched it! We got a DVR this year, the DVR is a blessing and a curse..
Those walking lessons were crazy! I saw much better advice on Good Morning America. Over there they explained that you are supposed to sway your hips and sashay a little when you walk in heels because that helps you keep your balance.
The bra show was revolutionary because it was easy to find the exact fit for your figure, but shoes and handbags? It's too confusing. I think novelty bags are fun and I get compliments all the time from strangers who stop me to say something nice about my handmade fabric bag. Once it was a classy woman at the Art Institute, so poo on you Mr. "Style Guru".
I ordered a box of shoes from Zappos and sent them all back because they didn't fit and there still were no other alternatives for me. Not a word on that show about bunions and arch supports... I'm not convinced! I'll keep wearing what I already have. I don't even own a "little black dress" because black makes me look a little bit like the living dead.
Susie, I think I have returned more shoes to Zappos than I have kept, but it's free, so I don't mind doing it. I HATE shoe shopping in stores, so it works out fine for me. And I love novelty bags, too.
AH! The sway your hips thing makes a lot of sense. I am definitely not a swayer, which is probably why it just hurts. Even in heels, I walk straight ahead like I'm wearing steel toed combat boots.
Robyn,
Just be glad you aren't "Living Oprah" this year, because on that show there were six shoes every woman MUST have. You would have had to have hid them in your fire pit or something.
Have some fun times in NYC!
Betty
Betty - you made my day! That is hilarious. I can't wait to see the show to see what these must-haves are! xo
The look on Oprah's face during the walking lessons cracked me up and seriously, who walks and stands like the "Walking Teacher." I know I would get quite a few looks if I walked like that!
It has always been such a wonderous thing that girls have issue's walking in heels. Humm... being a man who has "walked the walk" in heels numerous of times- I mean hours upon hours in 5"ers heels-- I always thought - Girls you got have the life in these magical things of beauty. Well.. it is understandable. First suggestion find a great catwalk video on Youtube- Suggestion: Linda Evangelista, or some supermodel-- and copy copy copy. Pick a girl who has a class that you like and copy. That is how I do it. Once seeing her walk in a straight line turn and come back to start- do it over and over and feel your hips shift and weight figure it out. Also, pick a heel that holds to your ankle and base of foot. this will really help- then work your way into those strappy heels.
Ok LOVE GIRLS IN HEELS. XOXO
