And the crowd goes wild! (Literally)

As my fellow Chicagoans know, there has been quite a hubbub about Oprah's show to be shot downtown today. They've basically closed down a usually-busy area of the city - the famous Magnificent Mile - in order to accomodate the concert and gala event. I'm keeping an eye on things from the safety of my own quiet apartment. Crowds make me nervous and waiting makes me miserable, so I couldn't bring myself to go down there. Here's what the Suntimes says has happened so far today. Yow! Sounds like a mad house. Still, I bet that the concert and show will be a huge amount of fun once it gets rolling. I'd love to hear from you if you went downtown and have stories to share! I'll try to post pictures and tales here, if you'd like. I'll be living vicariously though you today and will watch the show with everyone else next week...

Enjoy!

Stampeding over the elderly and faking disabilities to see the Black Eyed Peas? I'll watch it on TV.. At least it is a lovely Chicago day!

I used to love going to concerts and events all the time when I was younger, threw myself into mosh pits and willingly got sweaty with strangers in order to experience (usually) great live music.

However, as I've gotten older, I found myself progressively and distinctly under-enthused about the headaches of: getting there, finding parking, paying outrageous Ticketmaster fees (okay, that has no relevance to your post, but still true), waiting in lines... and then standing for hours on end. And, in general, I do not like crowds either.

When we lived in Chicago, I found myself moving further west to avoid the crowds and hassles of lakeside living. We even started to do all our shopping in the suburbs, because places like the Chicago CostCo were always insanely busy. We stopped going to visit our friends that lived further east, almost exclusively because of driving and parking hassles. And in all honesty, that was likely one of the biggest impetuses in finally moving out of IL after living there all my life.

So, like you, I am not a fan of crowds and waiting (especially in traffic). Which is one big reason I have surprisingly loved living in San Diego.

I have been anxiously awaiting new episodes of Oprah in the hopes that we'd hear from you more :) heehee. 1) I am excited to hear that things are moving along - that is fantastic! 2) Please tell me you are watching Whitney...even if there's a small recap, I thought, ok, this fall is definitely going to be all about the stars and the inside dish (and who knows what will happen to "your best life")!

Hope you are well!

Strange coincidences! I just checked your blog to see if you'd resumed posting, then moments later I clicked on a neighborhood website to learn Oprah is coming my direction: http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa090917_lj_oprah.18d254a05.html

We rarely go to the State Fair for the same reasons you listed about crowded events. Oprah won't entice us there, but I'm sure we'll get plenty of pre-Oprah advertising on local TV.

Congrats on the book, can't wait to see it in stores!

I too am watching your segment on "The Oprah Effect". Amazing how she has so much influence even on a show about how much influence she has! I wish you luck in your social experiment!

So when did you actually do this year of living Oprah? 2008? I assume so because if you have already written and had a book published it must have been a little while ago.
