Who owns language?

Just wanted to forward on this fun article that Betsy sent me regarding ownership of the "AHA MOMENT." It's by William Safire and can be found in the New York Times Magazine. Enjoy it: On Aha and Senior Moments. Let me know what you think.

At Book Expo America this year, there was a banner that read, "Live your best life." When I saw it, I gasped. I wondered if whoever was bold enough to use it would be receiving a phone call from Oprah's lawyers. Here's a terrible pic of it I snapped from my phone.

I'm off to the dentist (jealous?) and then to do the last edits on my book (jealouser?)
Have a great day.

Hey speaking of O having rights to evertything in the Universe have you seen the Mutual of Omaha ads for "Aha Moments"?? I just checked and they even have a web site...how'd that get by the lawyers?
Anyway, SO not jealous of either!! Editing is tedious, interesting, and satisfying yes! But frustrating and tiresome too. So good luck to you there and at the Dentist..funny my daughter and I have a dentist appt. this sat., blah! Is it dental hygiene month?
Heres to healthy teeth!

I thought it interesting that you would make such commitment to an idea until I saw the word "peeps" I hate the word, and all it implies, I also hate the thought that someone, anyone would give their life over to another person. Oprah is not God, what a total fallacy this is, a get rich quick scheme, no humility. I understand you have been a struggling artist for a long time, and that you need to make a living. But until you respect the lives God entrusted to you....peeps is insulting and disrespectful. For shame!!!!

Is it a case of Copyright infringement?

Uh-oh. I smell trouble a-brewing! LOL. Whomever doesn't know that Oprah uses that must be living under a rock (or not as obsessed). Heehee.

"In the current media world, Oprah Winfrey and Mutual of Omaha are involved in a legal dispute over the advertising use of the phrase “the aha moment." Oprah didn't invent the word, how does she claim it as hers?!

Along the same lines, I've often wondered how Overstock.com can get away with using "O." They even have an "O Club" and "O mail."

you should be free to use as you please. We should all live our best life. No one person owns anything in this world. It is yours for the time you are here. There are to many people with too many thoughts. Your living Oprah. lets get real and tackle other problems...

not surprised about the legal battle, but I can't imagine Oprah owns rights to "aha!" (maybe she "owns" "aha moment"?) still doesn't seem right.

definitely not jealous of the dentist visit.

I don't even know how she could own "aha moment." I can remember using it at least as far back as the 70s. Hey, maybe I really own it! Gotta go...I need to look into this...

I was always annoyed with the "O" thing...my last name starts with an "O" and I feel like I can't have anything with an "O" on it without people assuming it's an Oprah reference. Even BEFORE this project!

Things like that bother me. The woman (I mean Oprah), doesn't know where to stop. "Aha" moment has been commonly used to describe the phenomenon and I also know cognitive psychologists that use it to describe how the brain works.
Based on that, I can say that Oprah doesn't always use it right.

Oprah should know that if she continues like that at one point people who have any brains left will start turning off.

Robyn you are lucky to be doing Living Oprah in 2008, because this year the show sucks. I've seen maybe 5 shows this year. Unless she has Nate on, I don't intend to watch again. I had a lot more respect for her before, but because of lack of professionalism, inability to keep a straight face during difficult subjects and because of contradictory meaning I am not interested in the show anymore.

I think you may be doing the book at the right moment. Do you think Oprah can keep on going in this economy?

Your posts are informative and very entertaining. Your modeling and posing in the segment on Oprah was very funny. I love your humor. I look forward to your book. You are hysterical on camera and a very wonderful writer. Thank you Robyn! We love you in Palm Springs!

As an English teacher, I first heard "aha moment" in college and my professor who has a PhD said it. It is a very common term in the writers realm and is used in reference to an ephiphany, or a moment of sudden insight, so Oprah did not coin that.

Throughout my life, i have found that there are so many people out there that try all sorts of things to find "peace" or "perfection" in life with all of these cool little tricks like following oprahs way. well i have one thing to say, try following God for a year. follow his word. read the bible. he is the ONLY ONE in this world that can and will drive you to the things that you want oprah to. You make me sick

I just saw you on the CNN special "The Oprah Effect". I can't believe anyone would truly take her so seriously. Sometimes she has great advice, and other times I believe she is being paid off to say some of the things, or advertise certain products. She doesn't do anything for free, so to see someone spending thousands of dollars to "live" like Oprah, is sad. Do you really think half of her "favorite things" are actually her favorite things? Do you really think she reads any of those books or gives a crap about what the Oprah doctors have to say? Of course not. America eats it up, and keeps on making her richer and richer.

doesn't anyone get that this is just an experiment done out of curiousity? i'm always surprised when people that do not quite understand blogging or the internet manage to figure out how to leave comments(lol)

To crazybeatnick,

If your comment was in reply to mine, I do know how to use the internet, and I do understand that she is conducting an experiment. What I don't understand is why anyone would choose to waste their time on a woman who most likely doesn't care half as much about the world, as she says.

And the whole point of blogging is to have different point of views comment. How boring would a blog be if every comment was the same, "way to go!"?

If you didn't catch the CNN special which was aired last weekend in the UK, it made "livingoprah" look obsessed with Oprah. That was how she came across in their show.

Hi. I think I just naturally incorporate a lot of what Oprah promotes. I think your experience is interesting. Reminds me of "julia and Julie" which I saw today. I'd love you to visit my blog and leave a comment. I write all about learning and art. I invite you to support me by becoming a follower. Thanks!

I absolutely love this blog!!! I love that you gave birth to an idea, comitted, and allowed us all to watch it develop. I am only at the beginning of reading through your posts - how great!
I wonder whether you want this project to end, or whether you are anxiously awaiting the next episode?
I think we could all use some of your experience to live our best lives - after all, we all have something to give to one another.
Congratulations on the book.

Keep having fun, I look forward to following.

hey, LO! miss you posting. I just saw on Publishers Lunch today that O is going to announce her next book club pick on 9/18. Of course, this comes with the hype that she's never picked "a book like this" before. I think the timing is off, but wouldn't it be cool if "Living Oprah" were her pick???

Hopefully you won't give up your faith like my mother did, watching Oprah alone in the house for years caring for my Dad who has Alzheimer's. She was so sad that none of her grown kids or friends wanted to do the Oprah course online (did you do that?). I'm glad you are Living Oprah and I hope you tell the truth in your book-about the emptiness of living according to pop culture icon nonsense (but I think the fashion tips were probably helpful!) I hope you get fabulously successful and someone does a blog about you!
