Hi all. I'm back from our Thanksgiving travels. We all agreed it was a fabulous holiday and we had fun with our Oprah-approved menu and activities. I think we're all exhausted and need a vacation from the holiday, though!
Today's rerun with Barbara Walters was preempted by President-Elect Barack Obama's announcement about his National Security Team. I'll have to watch later, when it's replayed here in Chicago. I have seen this episode as it played earlier in the year, but as always, I'll watch again. Did anyone see it in its entirety today? If so, what did you think? Please chime in, since I cannot do so yet!
I'm home sick with a nasty cold today. Selma is purring away on my lap and I'm getting back to the project accounting I wasn't able to finish before I left for the east coast. Should be done with this tonight. I'm working in slo-mo but want to get this off my to-do list finally. *
I'm also finishing up reading both The Wisdom of the Desert and Four Quartets. They're on the list of five books everyone MUST read once - sent out by Oprah's Book Club. I've got a bunch of reading to hustle on. I love reading in general, but it's so nice to have some quiet moments of escape during the final stretch of the project. I cannot believe it's December 1st!
Incidentally, my birthday is later in the month and I'll be turning to Oprah.com for advice on how to celebrate properly. I love celebrating my birthday, and I'm generally protective of making certain I get to spend the day EXACTLY as I want. It will be a lesson in surrender to turn the planning of the day over. Not a bad thing, just a new one.
Ok. This is possibly the lamest, most rambly, dull blog all year. I'm going to pass the buck and blame it on my sinuses. I'll be listening to this sound file later. It's an interview Dr. Oz conducted with a doctor who wrote a book called Sinus Relief Now. Maybe I'll get some good advice on how to feel better soon. If not, maybe I should get someone to ghostwrite tomorrow's blog out of respect for you.
* By the way - this is embarrassing - I just went to update my accounting online and I couldn't remember my password. How humiliating. I'm ready to upload all the new info once the helpdesk sends it to me. Sorry, y'all.

Weclome back...and yes, getting back to the normal "routines" of life can be comforting!
Perhaps, just perhaps, you (all of us) are required to do too much in search of living your best life....making an entire Thanksgiving meal that is usually prepared by skilled chefs, reading novel upon novel, going to recommended movies, concerts, and making a box of graditude notes for your hostess, working out, taking care of a pet that you were told to get, kissing for 10 seconds a day....WOW....makes me tired just thinking about all you are doing.
Hope you can find time for a short nap today.
Betty
Oh, I'd trade pre-empts with you in a minute. I like BW and O so much but it felt really gossipy. Like when she spent so much time on weight loss with Queen Latifah instead of her musical and acting achievements--here you have one of the most accomplished journalists of the late 20th century, being interviewed by another journalist...and all they can focus on is Rosie O"Donnell's issues!? Oh, come on. It felt like listening to the girls gossip in the cafeteria. I don't care nearly as much about the last 10 years of BW's career as all the time before.
In some ways, that's not fair; I know she's really doing an important thing (for her and those of us who come after) in creating a new venue for herself in these last years of her career. She continues to be a pioneer all the way. But oy, who cares about Donald Trump and his riled ego when you've interviewed so many actual world leaders?
And good luck with the birthday celebration--I know O always gets a mammogram on hers! Life affirming and smart, but not really celebratory.
Welcome back!
I didn't care too much about today's episode, so I have nothing to say about it. I guess I was relieved to see interruption in daily programming ;)
I didn't see Oprah's show today, but I have a lifetime of sinus experience and I am proud to say that I have not had an infection in 1 year! Woo, that is a big deal for me. Here are my suggestions:
1. Irrigation- An Oprah approved Neti Pot or an over the counter Neil Med pump.
2. Vitamin D- I am sure oprah has had an expert on this at some point. Less sun= less Vit D= more colds and infections.
3. For relief- warm wash cloths heated in the microwave.
4. For long term help: Sinus surgery to open up the openings to the maxillary sinuses- the best lifesaver ever!
I find even your "boring" blogs fun and engaging, so keep m' coming! Maybe next year you can live a year of Anti Oprah- what ever she says, just do the opposite. :)
LO,
Do you still have to kiss your sweetie 10 seconds at a time while you suffer from a "major rager?" My husband won't let me kiss him at all when I have the least little sniffle, so how do you guys work that out?
You have my sympathy for your head. If I was in Chicago I'd bring you a little hot lemonade with honey or chicken noodle soup to help clear up your nasal passages. I tend to "mother" everyone when they're sick. :>) If you want something a bit tastier than chicken noodle soup, Chinese hot and sour soup works, too. Hope you get well soon; colds stink.
betty, thanks for understanding. a nap. that sounds HEAVENLY. i think i'll do that when jim comes home from work. nice.
memegrl, ah yes, i'm beginning to remember the show now. i remember one of my discomforts with it, originally, was that oprah and her audience were more interested and impressed with the fact that BW had an affair with a black man, rather than the fact she had an AFFAIR. i thought it was odd. but, i guess it makes sense since oprah once had an affair with a married man as well.
sam, hee hee - glad presidential press conferences tend to fall during convenient times for you! i wish i had that super power!
anon, i tried my neti pot...i know it's tmi, but i couldn't even get the water to travel thru my sinuses. they're too full. sorry. hope you weren't eating. :) did you get the sinus surgery?? what did you have done? and thanks for the support! you're awesome.
dawn-michelle, you TOTALLY come across as a nuturer. always! ooh - good question about the kissing. today will be the first day we have to contend with it. i'll let you know what happens. i might get 10 seconds worth of a slobbery forehead kiss tonight!! mmm...hot and sour....mmm....
xoLO
I love the neti pot for sinuses and allergies as recommended by Dr. Oz. I hope you feel better soon! This weather front we have in Chicago is not helping either.
MemeGRL- the BW show was really gossipy. Deliciously juicily gossipy. I loved it! The View is my other daily guilty pleasure and I recall fondly the dramas with Starr and later Rosie. It's all so comically silly and fun. It is funny how the ladies at The View deny and deny all gossip and rumor and then later, Barbara Walters confirms what we all knew was true all along.
Oprah famously does not acknowledge Whoopi Goldberg and I've always wondered why. Whoopi must have said something about Oprah in her act or somewhere...
I think that Oprah does a lot of reruns this time of year, so LO, you may be off the hook for new assignments from the show at least.
In the spirit of juicy gossip, I have to say that I, too, have wondered about that Whoopi/Oprah rift. She wasn't invited to Oprah's legends ball, and Whoopi has said some critical things about Oprah on the View.
I find BW tiresome in her celebrity worship, not upset I missed that show.
Any hoo- Yes, I did have the FESS sinus surgery that the author of that sinus book writes about. It reduced the turbinates slightly and opened the passages to the maxillary (cheek) sinuses so that irrigation could be effective. It was icky, but totally amazing for my health.
"She wasn't invited to Oprah's legends ball, and Whoopi has said some critical things about Oprah on the View."
What did Whoopi say about Oprah on the View? I know Oprah had both Whoopi & Elizabeth on her show the day before the election (in a clip telling people to vote).
As for Whoopi not being invited to the Legends Ball, she's too young to be a legend and too old to be a young'n, so there was really no place for her there.
iamsusie, i've wondered the same thing. not enough to research, but enough to be curious! :)
anon, i'm clueless about this - i've not heard whoopi's comments, either. maybe i should suck it up and look into it. FESS, huh? i'll check it out. i've never heard of it.
morepower, i checked out the list - whoopi falls right in line with a couple of the guests' ages, if imdb is to be trusted, so i don't think thats quite it. but you're one of the masters at looking up oprah-based info. if you find out what's up, let us know! thanks a ton.
xoLO
Whoopi has won an Oscar and was nominated along with Oprah for The Color Purple. So I think she would probably qualify as a "legend".
The Legends Ball thing happened way before Whoopi said anything at all on The View because I think Starr and Meredith were still hosting. Whoopi did say something on The View way back in the early primary about Oprah using her celebrity to endorse Obama. I tried Googling "Oprah Whoopi Feud" and couldn't really find anything other than that yes there seems to be something amiss.
I like Whoopi and I really wonder what she did that was so bad..
susie, i like whoopi, too. a lot. here's what i found. it's not much: http://www.bestweekever.tv/2007/12/03/exclusive-whoopi-tears-oprah-a-new-one/ maybe oprah doesn't like whoopi because whoopi always dresses like a schlumpadinka?? actually, i don't know if they like each other or not. it's all hearsay until we hear it come out of their mouths, right? and it probably NEVER will! xoLO
Here's what I found. According to the tabloids back in 1998, Whoopi trashed Oprah's movie Beloved, said Oprah needed to get off her high horse, and trashed her for promoting her movie.
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.gossip.celebrities/browse_frm/thread/cc8585f4d51653d8/b75a52b3c75018ad?lnk=st&q=whoopi+goldberg+oprah&rnum=2&hl=en#b75a52b3c75018ad
It was Whoopi who had a problem with Oprah; Oprah never had a problem with Whoopi and actually praised Whoopi as an actress a couple years ago on Larry King.
morepower, i knew you'd find some history there! also - i figure, it's oprah's party, she can invite whomever she wants. yes, whoopi does hold a very important role in show biz history as an african american woman, but it doesn't mean oprah MUST invite her to a party, right? the list of invitees was terrific, but there were other black women who weren't there besides whoopi. i think MAYBE, just maybe, tabloids have made this a bigger 'feud" than it really is. just a thought. muchas gracias! xoLO
Yes, I doubt Oprah and Whoopi are spending much energy on any feud. They may not be close or particularly friendly, but they probably respect each other's achievements.
I love the way Whoopi dresses like a schlumpadinka all the time. At least she can walk! I year of Living Whoopi would be a LOT easier than this year of Living Oprah, although you'd probably have to get a super fancy butt washing toilet. Whoopi has those.
Hope you feel better soon. The Dr. oz clip would put me right to sleep. Maybe that might help?
I caught the interview at the gym today. Baba is too funny with her theatrics sometimes.
S
susie, i totally agree - W and O are really busy women. if they spent as much time on resentments and feuds as the tabloids insist, they wouldn't accomplish 1/2 of what they do! what is this about the toilet?? is it like O's bidet?
sadaf, lol! BW has some behavior that i have NEVER seen anyone else ever do. she's so fascinating. i hope she made your time on the treadmill fo by really quickly.
xoLO
They've spent lots of time on Hot Topics talking about Whoopi's fancy toilets. (I totally googled "Whoopi's Toilet" just to get the info right.)
They have a remote on the wall, silent operation. heated seats, front and rear washing at variable speeds and variable drying. Whoopi says she isn't really into "chi-chi foo-foo" but this toilet is an extravagance she absolutely savors. Cheri gives a whole report on the experience:
http://defamer.com/hollywood/potty-humor/the-ladies-of-the-view-discuss-whoopis-super+toilet-312557.php
Sorry.. I thought we were talking about your cold and Barbara Walters. I apologize for steering your comments into this territory. ;-)
I like Whoopi's no-nonsense attitude in life, and I like her proud schlumpadinkaness. If she wouldn't find it completely insane, I would consider a year of living Whoopi.
And she gets all these hot guys, too.
Oprah looks insecure in proximity to Whoopi, imho. Just like I imagine I would look insecure next to Whoopi. I would look insecure next to Oprah, too. In a pyramid of insecurity, I would be the wide bottom and Whoopi would be the sharp point.
Getting to Barbara, there's a gentleman whose blog I read who knows Barbara from her early days in journalism who maintains that Barbara has bent the truth, and omitted other fairly large parts of her life from her book. I guess that's her prerogative. But then, why write a book?
susie and paula, you had me laughing out loud.
first of all, susie, please never feel like you need to apologize when you turn the conversation to matters of the toilet. remember - i proudly told every here when my poo was "s" shapped. i have no shame when it comes to bowel-based discussion.
second of all, paula, i hear that this is how the egyptian pyramids were engineered. the paula-to-oprah-to-whoopi ratio is what it's called. and it's withstood the test of time. secondly, i wonder if anyone came out and negated BW's book (and could prove his/her assertions of BW's bending of the truth)...would O invite her back for a James Frey-like lambasting???
xoLO
My favorite cold remedy is a hot shower followed by my magical winter elixir: strong hot tea with plenty of brown sugar and a hearty splash of scotch. (This is the only way I drink whiskey.) It takes about three sips to get used to the flavor, but the tea warms you up and the scotch vapors go right to the nose.
Btw, I'm the drunkard of the previous post. :-) -yogajen
In this case, I don't think Barbara would come in for the James Frey treatment, because her book isn't an Oprah pick (or am I wrong?) and Barbara has this commanding, steely gaze. I think on the insecurity pyramid, Barbara might be fighting Whoopi for the top.
Ladies! What a great discussion (and from a rerun). I didn't know anything about the O/Whoopi stuff. Thanks for the info. Very interesting.
I thought the show was OK. I had seen it once already and watched it again.
I think that Barbara's relationship with her sister is the most facinating topic covered. I think that what she says about the way that her sister's disability affected her is something that isn't addressed enough in our society. (On a shallow note, I always really enjoy seeing pictures of older guests when they were younger.)
hi there,
I was directed here via slowblogs, and just wanted to tell you I think you are hilarious and brilliant. Will be back!!
