Rockin' the vote

So, after all my fear about waiting in line for 5 hours only to be frustrated by touchscreen voting booths, I walked straight into my polling place this morning - no line - and was handed a paper ballot.

Just as Oprah mentioned on the show today, I thought there would be quite a wait. I came prepared with my iPod, my phone, a journal, snacks, reading material, kleenex, a beverage, and the list goes on. I didn't even have to open my bag once!

As you know, I voted how Oprah directed, but felt really lucky not have the added pressure of voting for a candidate I didn't believe in. I wonder if my commitment to my project would have given me the strength to vote against my will, but I was absolutely let off the hook and didn't have to contend with a huge moral issue. I'm relieved, of course. While I fulfilled an Oprah "assignment," I didn't really have to vote entirely according to someone else's ideals or pressure (which, I think, sadly, isn't too uncommon). I felt so emotional over the whole thing, as I was standing in my booth, I kept tearing up and sniffling. I was so proud to vote. I remember going into voting booths with my mom when I was a child and that excitement, that buzz, continues for me almost 30 years later. What a great thing we get to do.

Like many of Oprah's Skyped-in guests, Jim and I are throwing an election night party. Many of our friends are going downtown (where Oprah will be) to attend the Obama rally. It's a longtime tradition in my family to have an election party, so I didn't want to break with convention. Plus, I can't deal with crowds. I go crazy with claustrophobia.

Anyhow...I'm a bit of a dork. I had no idea who the "house band" was on Oprah's show this morning until it was announced and explained. I had definitely heard the name before, but had never heard them play. Once again, I prove I have my finger on the pulse of what's hot.

As you might imagine, Oprah's main assignment today was to VOTE. She said it in many ways, many times. She even told her at-home audience to turn off the TV and go vote, if they hadn't already. I'd already cast my ballot by the time I watched this morning. I was a bit disappointed. That would have been fun - to be ordered by Oprah to turn her show off and have to comply. Ah well.

For those of you who have seen the show (or will see it later): what was up with Tyler Perry? I thought it was fabulous he admitted he was a first time voter in order to get other's to come to the polling place. However, was it me, or was he cutting in line? He kept talking about how amazing it was that other people were waiting for hours, but it looked like he was even escorted past the elderly people in wheelchairs! I mean, Oprah Winfrey waited in line when she could have jumped past everyone - it might have been better form for Perry to do the same. But perhaps I missed something and you saw something different that I did? Please let me know!

Oprah had one last bit of advice for us all. Because tonight would be a tense evening in front of our televisions, she suggested that, "Nobody should watch alone." Check.

Here's what I believe...everything is going to be ok. No matter the outcome. I don't know if it's Oprah's assignments impacting me, but I just believe that everything happens when it's supposed to and we'll all be all right.

Ask me tomorrow if my heart is still bursting with rainbows and unicorns.

Hooray for voting! I'm so glad you didn't have long lines. I live in VA and waited for about an hour this morning (which is completely acceptable).

I noticed some parents with small kids at the polling place this morning, but for some reason I think that this is illegal in some states/counties. I think I remember my parents had to take turns holding us kids when we were young because only one person can be at the booth at a time. I was surprised to see pictures of Sasha and Malia at the polling place (don't they have school?), but I'm glad they were able to share such a special moment with their parents.

I can't wait for the returns to start! Enjoy your party/evening all!

Re Tyler Perry: Just remember, this is a guy who has to put his name in front of every project he works on as in "Tyler Perry's House of Payne", "Tyler Perry's Diaries of a Madwoman" and "Tyler Perry Has to Go Pee Now". I think he's a bit ego drivne. Guess he has read an Eckhart Tolle. Oprah should give him one of the books.

I got to vote early-YAY! We just walked right in and voted. The first time I ever voted, I got the same teary eyed feelings. This time around...I just don't know...I wasn't feeling either candidate, so I just voted for who I felt most compelled to vote for.

But like you, all I can hope for is that whatever new path our country is going to take, that we'll all come together as one community, regardless of president, and start taking care of each other.

Happy Voting Day!

Not all students have class today because of the voting precincts which happen to be IN their schools.

I think it's great Obama had his girls with him. This will be a memorable day either way it turns out for his family and he and his wife probably thought it was an educational as well as supportive way for their girls to learn how important it is to vote.

Daughtry was the house band? I looked on the website cause I was wondering who it was. I will be interested to see how the show goes when it comes on later at 3 pm. I'm only 3 hours to the west of you but our show isn't til later!

Voting at my precinct was also quick, which it always is since I live outside a village :)

Glad you had a great impactful day.

I got all weepy at the polls, too. Who knew, right?

We got right in at our polling place today too. I voted during the show this morning, so mercifully, I missed it. I dislike Oprah's celebrity extravaganza party event shows.

I didn't get emotional when voting, but I might when the results come in. Whatever happens, I agree with you that everything will be fine.

Did you see Obama's ballot in that video this morning? He voted pretty quickly and I wonder how he went on all those Judicial Retention questions you all have to do in Cook County. I also wonder if he went "Yes" on our Illinois Constitutional Convention question.

yogajen said...

I HATE the judicial retention questions. I try to make at least marginally informed choices for all the offices, but where does one go to learn about judges? I sure don't have time to root through the public record and analyze the career of each judge.

I waited from 7:35-8:00 at my polling place this morning. No problem there, but it is the first time I've had to wait more than a few minutes. One worker reported that people had started lining up at 5:30 a.m.

Hey LO, glad you didn't have to vote against your heart.

I arrived at my polling place (outside Atlanta Ga) at 5:45. The polls open at 7:00. I was number 20! I was back in my car by 7:20. I waited longer in '04. We have early voting here and for the last 45 days (I think it's 45 days) I've heard nothing but the agony of waiting up to 8 hours... here's what people forget. During early voting there aren't many places to go. Once election day has arrived there are hundreds of places. It may have helped that a lot of folks went early. Personally, I like going on election day and going through the paces.

There was a bit of excitement in the air, I must admit, and everybody was in this hyper super good mood.

I hope everything goes well tonight.

yogajen- I print up a sample ballot at my home computer and then I google the local newspapers and see what they recommend on the judicial retentions. I'm hoping that if they do a Constitutional Convention here in Illinois, they will get rid of the Judicial retentions forever. It's a terrible system. Up here in Lake County, IL, we only had to vote on 3 so it wasn't nearly as bad as I remember in Cook County.

yogajen said...

iamsusie--I print out the sample ballot, too. (Great minds think alike, eh?) Unfortunately, with 70 judicial retentions to consider here in Cook Co., I'm afraid my sense of patriotic duty is not equal to the Googling task. :-) Maybe next time, if I start a month in advance....

Sorry, I think it's pathetic that Tyler Perry is voting the first time in his life. I guess Acorn didn't get him when he was 35. It's an embarrassment. Is it a bit racial that he says he is now empowered? Is he like M. Obama who said it's her first time she's proud to be an American? Sad

teresa said...

I thought that TylerPerry dude was walking past everyone in line because there was another line (that we didn't see) for people who still needed to get registered. Who knows.
That would've been great if she had him as an "Al-Frankin-esque correspondant" with a satellite attached to his head giving a minute by minute report of standing in line for the full hour of the show.

I will be breaking Oprah's demand tonight, and watching the election alone. I hope I'll be ok.

I think it's pathetic that this is the first time T. Perry has voted. He says this is the first time he is empowered. I guess he is like M. Obama and this is the first time he's proud to be a American. Voting just because it is a bi-racial candidate? Sad...very sad. Acorn must have finally got to him this year. Or maybe others TOLD him to vote. What's with people having to tell you to vote?

Anonymous said...

Too many people vote anyway... they should at least make you tell them who your Congressman is, or Senator, or maybe see if you even know the branches of Government. I just think it is sad that most of the people who voted today couldn't tell you what the candidates views are without repeating some campaign ad they saw on TV. And most of the TV ads are lies anyway or at least variations of the truth.

Sorry, had to vent.

I too teared up when I voted last week because it is an awesome responsibility and beautiful right that we as Americans take for granted.

I'm with you on the outcome, either way we're gonna be alright.

Now, how awkward was it when those skypers wanted to play their election game with Oprah? I want to shake that guy and yell, "don't improvise you freak! It's the Oprah show not the Skype Dude show!"

LO, I have also been tearing up -- for days now. I voted, I'm also proud I voted.

I'm sad to say I'm not in my hometown (chicago) tonight -- i'm in NY for work, and I'm essentially alone. I plan on sitting at the hotel bar until it closes to see what I can. Your post made me feel better. Thanks, LO!

after voting I tried to explain the electoral college system to a 20 year old. Lots of luck! what DO they teach the kids in the schools these days??

laurajeanette said...

In a lot of public schools, they teach the kids to memorize answers to multiple choice questions so that they won't lose their funding.

LO - paper?! Really? Wow. We had all electronic - and from what I hear it really depends on the district you are in (apparently I am in a high voting and advanced on, because even some of my coworkers said they had a choice, which we did not (not that it was hard)). I enjoyed O's show today...thought it was kind of like her new Friday live shows, encouraging participation from the audience, and of course some entertainment.

I am so jealous that you are having a party! Sounds like a lot of fun. You're probably having a blast right now! I also agree that no matter the outcome, I was very proud of going to vote, and it seemed that everyone I know was totally into this election.

Re: Tyler Perry - Yeah - um, he totally cut the line!

Ok, better go watch history...can't wait to see what happens on O tomorrow!!

It's a sad, sad, day in America when anyone would march out and do anything Oprah Winfrey tells them to do! Especially when she makes it so clear what the only "correct" (ie: her) choice of vote is! I sincerely hope that everyone who voted took the time and energy to do it because they believe in it and understood what, exactly, they were voting for.

Jeri said...

Isn't it funny that we get all teary...don't tell me that liberals aren't patriotic! Oprah was, not surprisingly, in the crowd when Obama made his acceptance speech. What I hope all Americans take away from this election is that doing your patriotic duty...voting...is important and valuable. Let the healing begin!

Oprah was totally hiding behind that big guy at the rally tonight.

Greetings from California, where we've had a busload of propositions to choose from beside the presidency. I walked right into my polling place and got my paper ballot and "super secret ballot sleeve" and groovy pen. Very low tech. Teared up a bit before I filled in the bubble -- a historic choice anyway I voted.

My friends kept asking why I didn't do early voting. I like standing in a room with my neighbors. I like the process of voting. I think a lot of it is because when I was a kid my parents put a lot of emphasis on voting and always took me with them. Plus the history major in my realizes that it hasn't been so long that women have had the right to vote.

I agree LO -- it's all going to be okay. Happy Election day everyone!

Is your heart bursting with rainbows and unicorns? Did you go to the rally in Grant Park? Here in NYC we saw Oprah at the rally!

Over here in Oz the election results got four hours of live coverage and everyone I know was watching the results expectantly, all hoping that Obama would win.

And when he did, I had a little tear too, and I'm 6ft5" and often get asked if I'm a bouncer. My cat laughed at me......

Seb said...

I just had to add a quote that was in the news tonight from a voter about the energy where you are right now "When I got to my voting location this morning it was cold out but there was something different about the day. I have never seen so many people up at 6am. Everyone was kind and we all knew where each other were headed."

It reminds me of Maya Angelou for some reason...

I'm so glad people got out and voted this year. Every time I vote, I feel this big rush of patriotism and can't help but get teary too.

It's such an important thing to do--no matter who you are for or what your beliefs are. It's so important to get your voice heard--BUT to also be aware of what is going on and KNOW about your government and the issues and the candidates (Tyler Perry, I'm talkin' to you)...I am happy that people came out to vote but sincerely hope they voted as they did for the right reasons--and not merely for superficial, feel-good commercial-ad reasons, although ads played heavily into this campaign.

Either way, this is something that unites us, and voting is in and of itself a hopeful and optimistic act.

It was a little frustrating watching Tyler Perry seemingly bypass all those looooong lines of voters waiting to vote and just go hop to the front of the line to cast his own vote. Is that possible?! Can a person get some kind of voting privilege like that just because they have money or fame?

'Cause that's sure what it looked like . . . Disappointing!

teresa said...

Tyler Perry is barely famous enough to get 'line jumping privileges'. He's about as recognizable as any of the current line-up on ER, like , whose are those people?
