Hi y'all! I hope you had a terrific holiday. We're full and exhausted and getting ready for some Black Friday shopping tomorrow. We're going BARGAIN-HUNTING at the outlets. My mom and aunt have mapped out the sales and we are actually hitting the stores at 6am. I could weep, but while sleeping in sounds attractive, I really want to stay with my family. I hardly see them otherwise!
Ok, quick follow up to yesterday's assignment that I wanted to keep close to the chest when I initially posted. Oprah said, "First, my thrifty idea for a hostess gift: Create a gratitude box. Give out the notecards to all the guests and then ask them write a special note to the host. And then put all the notes in the box." Done! Of course, no stores were open by the time I heard Oprah's suggestion, so I had to MacGiver a box together. It was pretty sad looking, but my mom loved it. She adored reading our letters. Some of you expressed that you wouldn't have liked being forced to write a heartfelt note under "duress" - some of my family really agreed with you. There were a couple rolled eyes at the request. Still, I think we were ALL feeling warm and fuzzy when we watched her open it.
Thanksgiving dinner was awesome. It was incredibly expensive in comparison to our traditional Turkey Day, but the Oprah.com/O Magazine recipes were mostly hits with only a few misses. We had roasted turkey, bacon nut stuffing, roasted potatoes with garlic and shallots, roasted carrots with thyme, roasted green beans, cranberry conserves, and the festive holiday salad. For dessert, my aunt made a pumpkin tart, the sweet potato/pecan pie, cream cheese chocolate chip cookies (these got the biggest thumbs down). Everything was made fresh and there wasn't a can of cream of mushroom soup or a fried onion in sight. (The can opener is usually one of our most-used utensils during Thanksgiving preparation). There were a few thing we thought we would do again next year with a few adjustments. And there were some complaints that there were no mashed potatoes or pumpkin pies (we couldn't find recipes for these on Oprah's site, sadly. And my aunt already made her pumpkin tart by the time Cristina Ferrare shared her pumpkin chiffon pie recipe yesterday). All in all, we had a lot of fun together.
One big hit was from a list of Oprah-approved activities. As advised on one of the Oprah.com lists about how to celebrate the holiday, we made the main meal at my mom and dad's home, but side dishes and desserts came from family from other states. We normally do this, anyhow, but a few more family members took part in the baking/cooking than usual, which was fabulous. We also did the Getting to Know You question game. My husband added extra questions that were HILARIOUS. I found out more about the family than I ever needed to know, but we laughed our butts off.
Many folks watched Oprah this afternoon. There were some tears. It was a nice show. Inspiring. Who doesn't love a man who's just learning how to read and LOVES books? It was a feel-good rerun.
I'm so exhausted. A great day, filled to the brim! This was one of the most enjoyable Oprah experiences I've had all year. It was also one of the most expensive.
Have a GREAT night. Hope everyone is digesting well.
I think I need an antacid.

I'm so glad to hear that the dinner went well, and even happier that the gratitude box was well received--your mom deserves it! If in person she's anything like she is online, you are a lucky woman (and it sounds like you know it).
If you thought this was expensive, just hope she doesn't re-run the Colin Cowie Christmas! The beef tenderloins in pink peppercorns are truly one of the most amazing things I have ever consumed in my entire life. But a beef tenderloin will make your turkey bill look like lunchmeat! Still, at least it was delicious, and how kind of your family to play along.
Happy Thanksgiving, LO!
Thanks for sharing your thanksgiving with us.
I'm glad it turned out to be one of the best Oprah experiences for you.
LO -
I have been an avid reader since your MIL filled us in on your project and it was featured in the trib (I wish that I knew about it earlier - I have been hooked!)...
I grew up with Jim - so I can only imagine what his "added questions" were... care to share???
Hey Lo,
Happy Turkey Day
Sent you an e-mail. Its long, I know!
Love the box you gave your mom.
I'm glad your family help out with your assignment.

You didn't look hard enough for the mashed potatoes.

memgrl, you are so sweet. AND hilarious. the colin cowie recipe sounds amazing. but to cook it for a dozen people would probably have burned up my credit card. still, i'd like to try.
sam, gracis!
anon, i believe there were questions along the lines of super powers we'd like to have, what crime we'd commit if we knew we wouldn't get caught, embarrassing childhood memories, that sort of thing. thanks so much for writing! have you and i ever met?
darlin' rozetta! i didn't see your note. i'm going to check as soon as i watch today's oprah. happy holidays to you! xo
hey bubbledumpster! our menus were derived right from oprah's thanksgiving menus. sadly, we didn't see this recipe as part of her turkey day suggestions. was it? lol! if so, don't tell my cousin steven we missed it. he'll be VERY annoyed with my mom and me!
have a great weekend. xoLO
Hi LO,
I think this may be considered more expensive a Thanksgiving in certain areas of the country, but in others this is the norm. I live in CA and we do not used canned items for most of the meal on holidays. If you look at the food network website for similar recipes, they will be using fresh ingredients as well. The expense of the meal is probably a regional thing, not an Oprah thing.
I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of your day!
LO,
Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving! And your McGyvered box was much nicer than I expected it to be--very festive!
My family doesn't do much canned on Thanksgiving--fresh yams and cranberries and frozen corn, but they would die if they had to go without the green bean casserole with canned cream of mushroom soup and deep-fried onions. I did add a new dish this year, just to be different--scalloped Vidalia onions. They turned out to be pretty yummy and my dad, the pickiest eater on earth, really liked them! I almost cried. :>)
On a side note, your mom's dining room light is just like the one I have in my kitchen. Cool!
Hope you have a fun day shopping! Way to support the economy--woohoo!

Hey LO! I'm thankful for having YOU on my RSS feed, and for your thoughtful and funny posts. Your Thanksgiving looked like so much fun - I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend!
Would love to see some of your husband's funny additions to the "Getting to Know You" game...
No mashed potatoes! No pumpkin pie! You must have needed a spare oven to do all that roasting. Cream cheese chocolate chip cookies don't sound particularly delicious, but the rest of it sounds yummy.
I did 'single person Thanksgiving', which was cornish game hen, brussel sprouts I'll be eating for a week & mashed potatoes/turnips. This does not keep me from eating a months worth of food in a few days.
I still pigged out b/c my birthday was Tuesday so..a friend took me for Chinese monday, I got Thai food w/another friend Tuesday, got cheesecake Tuesday night, had cheesecake factory friday (mmm leftover peppermint cheesecake), got chocolates at the outlet mall friday, had denny's for breakfast today & was treated to our local sub place today. Between the leftovers & the gluttony i'm about to pass out.
LO, Thanks for the cute video clips. Made me not so sad I wasn't with you all to share in Thanksgiving...gotta love the side comments from my dad ;) I am glad it went over well. I got to try some of the conserve and it was interesting but I am just a fan of the ocean spray can I guess!
XOXO

OMG We could have had mashed potatoes?!?! I can't believe it!
I'm just kidding...the potatoes we had we good but I did miss the mashed and more importantly the pumpkin pie!
too funny....I love the family laughing after the Thanksgiving greeting!
