Don't worry...the economy is JUST FINE

Perhaps from the subject of this post, you can glean that while I was watching the show today, Oprah was pre-empted by the President's press conference. If you watched the speech, you'd know not to worry...the economy is not so bad afterall. So, fill up that tank, go for a shopping spree and apply for a new mortgage. It's party time, people.

Luckily, ABC plays Oprah episodes twice each day in Chicago so I can watch the rest later tonight. Crisis averted. Everything really WILL be fine.

Today's show is the big "Must Haves" episode that launched the white jeans neurosis that filled many of my days. Thankfully, I have already completed this project, so I no longer have to worry about buying leopard print flats and a white denim jacket. And you don't have to worry about talking me off the ledge again.

If you're bored at your desk and need to push the envelope with what is appropriate "personal time" to take at work, click here and listen to an interview I did about this project for Chicago's WGN Radio with Nick Digilio. In fact, I've got a couple more interviews lined up...it's all very exciting, but a double-edged sword. On one hand, I'm beyond tickled that folks are finding this project interesting and I love to spread the word and keep the discourse rolling. On the other hand, it squeezes me even tighter time-wise and I have less flexibility when it comes to scheduling the completion of my Oprah-given suggestions/homework. All in all, it's a bit stressful. Still, I feel pretty darn grateful.

By the by, Oprah's new website has launched. I've been using it as a sort of bible for life during this project, so I'm looking forward, nervously, to seeing how it's changed. It certainly looks prettier and I hope it works better, too.

Since I'm new here, I was wondering if you ever got any of the Sarah Jessica Parker clothing that Oprah featured some months ago. I believe that was the last time I watched Oprah - and it confirmed to me the reasons for my boycott. We don't have Target up here, so I actually haven't seen any of the clothes. I wonder what you thought of them.

wandering coyote, the SJP "Bitten" line is only available at a store called Steve and Barry's and they don't sell online or have a store in chicago, so i've never seen the clothes in person. sadly, i didn't love the clothes that were on the show. i REALLY wanted to. i think it's awesome what SJP is doing by having the clothes made in America and sold at a really low price point. from what i could see though, they wouldn't be that flattering on me, at least. maybe if i was 10 years younger.

anyone out there seen the Bitten clothes that wants to comment on them?

thanks! best, LO

Oh, my mistake...I thought it was Target. The clothes did not appeal to me, and what bugged me about the episode was how the clothes more modeled - on thin models with physiques similar to SJP's. I believe there were plus sizes in the line, but they didn't seem to be clothes that would flatter a size 18, and it would have been nice to see some...ah..."larger" models exhibiting the clothes.

I agree totally. xoLO

There's a Steve & Barry's out near Ikea in Schaumburg. I've seen her line there, and it's basically knit t shirts, sweaters and leggings. It's hard to find any US clothing manufacturers who can do anything other than t shirt fabrics, which may have something to do with her selection of styles. I didn't think the clothes even looked good on SJP.

Not to put more pressure on you, but I was thinking that it would be interesting for us, as the audience for your performance, to actually see video of you accomplishing these tasks. Might that be doable sometimes?

paula, i agree about how the clothes looked on SJP. i wish i had a car, i'd totally check out the S&B...i'm so fascinated by the place. and yes...i think it will be possible to do more video. i had always planned to do it, but the project is FAR busier...no wait, FAR FAR FAR busier...than i thought and time got crazy tight. HOWEVER, i just asked the ubby if he could help out on that front and he said yes. so good news! i'll get some up online. thanks much! best, LO

I just watched this episode (my first time seeing it). I liked Lloyd and I think it's great they went shopping at local department stores. My favorite comment was about wearing flats because you want to not because you have to. Ha! I'm 5'9", so I guess after they go out of style, I will fall back into the latter category.
But, YAY for the fashion thumbs up.

Also, so relieved about the economy! I had been worried about that but I guess I'm in for some sweet dreams from here on out. Thanks, GWB.

LO,

Am I mistaken or is this not the first time your viewing of Oprah has been pre-empted by the Prez?

On a totally unrelated topic, I happened to be over in the West Loop late yesterday and while waiting to meet up with a friend decided to run into the Oprah Store and satisfy my curiosity.

SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading now if you're just dying to go and want to be surprised.

I must say I was underwhelmed. I was expecting more uniqueness to the merchandise line and more support for charities (maybe there was and I just missed it). Pretty much everything, except for the South Africa stuff and the Oprah's Closet (which had it's own security guard!), was just stuff that could be found anywhere, but had O all over it. I mean, iPod covers? Really?

The South Africa stuff was interesting, but overpriced, in my opinion.

I just thought there was so much opportunity for her to offer some cool, unique stuff that would really make her store stand out - maybe stuff that was made by women who received microloans in developing countries or locally made stuff - and wondered why she seemed to take the easy way out.

All in all, I was less than impressed.

hey sheasy! i'm a tall girl too - and i agree - we should wear whatever we want, damn it! (although, i'd prefer to steer away from leopard print)

LMS - you are spot-on. it has totally happened before! maybe even twice.

(shakes fist to heavens and throatily howls Dubya!!!)

when my friends and i visited the boutique, we felt the same way. we thought it was terribly overpriced and the inventory was underwhelming. we were also surprised. i thought there would be a much larger book section and many fewer pieces of pastel leisurewear. you and i are totally on the same page.

hixx, that makes me so happy to hear. let me know what you think!
