Simon says...

I always get a little stuck when Oprah tells me how to feel. You all know I try to follow her advice to the letter, but it's much more difficult to negotiate when her words are more esoteric. I'll stop beating around the bush...what I'm referring to is today's show with Cher and Tina Turner in Las Vegas. Oprah shouted like one of the gods on Olympus, "We love Cher! We love Cher!" Her words were so definitive, I feel like I need to honor them. My first response was to shout back at the TV, "I love Cher! I love Cher!" My husband came running into the room and asked what happened. I guess it sounded like I was in distress. I explained to him what happened and we discussed the difficulty in forcing myself to feel how Oprah says I should. Here's what I did...I looked at images of Cher in the old days, in her crazy costumes, with her great abs, her fearlessness and decided I could generate something like love for the Bob Mackey-wearing diva. Did I mention her abs?

Y'all have any thoughts?? What do I do when Oprah tells me how I feel? I might have to take it on a case by case basis. I'm not so sure what I would have done had she screamed, "We love Celine Dion!! We love Celine Dion!!" My head might have exploded off my neck with the effort.

Oh - here's proof of my dancing (as advised at the end of the show yesterday). In this image, I was dancing to Proud Mary. My mouth was open in every single one of the photos we took. I hope it was because I was singing and not because I walk around with my mouth hanging open all the time.

Oprah made me a little sad for her today. In talking about the upcoming performance by Tina and Cher, Ms. Winfrey said, "I don't get excited by a lot of things..." She went on to say that today's show was a thrill for her, however. But, with all the amazing things Oprah gets to experience, it sounds as if she's jaded by it all. I thought how depressing that would be for me. I told my husband how grateful it made me for my own little life. I said to him that I get excited about a lot of things (he said, "Yeah, you do.") and that I couldn't imagine living in a world that I didn't find exhilarating. While I definitely do feel as if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence from time to time, regarding this topic, I'll stay on my own property.

And I think I've just gotten my first big ticket purchase suggestion from Oprah. Here's what she said, "You can see Cher live at Caesar's right now. Get your tickets today for her spectacular production, 'Cher at the Colosseum.'" I freaking out people!! So, on one hand she said i CAN see Cher. That gives me the power of choice whether or not I'll really see her. But she did say to get my tickets today. HOLY CRAP! I think I've just been given the first real test of my wallet. WHOA! Clearly by all the capitalization, I've snapped. I'd love to hear your input, but my gut reaction is that I have to buy tickets today.

When is this project over again? What idiot came up with the idea to do EVERYTHING Oprah says?! Oh yeah, I did.

Wow, that is quite the quandry. I would say that if Cher is not comming to your city, then you do not need to go. I agree she did say can.

But I'm totally broke, so that colours my judgement. Maybe there is something on her website about evaluating if you can afford a big ticket item?

I find it sad that you're finding this project stressful, considering the mission was to make your life better.

I would say just based on the quote you posted that if you are at Caesar's then you need to buy the tickets. She doesn't say anything about rushing to Las Vegas to see Cher.

I think that's totally open to mkc's interpretation. You CAN buy the tickets, you know, should you be in the vicinity.

Cher's not too bad though.
Imagine if she'd said you had to buy Celine Dion tickets?
Gah! Personally I'd be sat there with industrial strength ear-plugs and a sour look on my face for the entire thing.

(By the way, I still haven't actually seen any Oprah since about 1998, so should I do your mini questionnaires?
I'm not currently because I'm guessing that would throw your results out of wack, but if you'd like that then I could!)

I'm with Lara here. I find it sad that this project that is supposed to be making your life better is causing you financial and emotional stress. Just wait - next week she'll have Suzie on talking about managing your money and making wise financial decisions! And it was the word CAN - I watched that this afternoon, just a few minutes ago and thought "O dear - what is LO going to do with that one." So sure if you are in the area, or she is coming to your area buy the tickets - but I personally see no reason for you to travel to Nevada simply to take in a concert.

I know I'm bumming folks out with my practicality!

Blessings,

Garsy

I think someone reading your post must have a connection to free or cheap tickets and can help you out. Oprah is into the big give. So this can be Giving Big to Living Oprah, come on people, someone has tickets or a connection. Send them LO's way!

hey everyone! thanks for your input. it was so great to get back to my computer and see what everybody had to say.

remember, my project rules say it doesn't matter if i need what oprah says, or if her suggestion is convenient or even possible! :) i'm acting out her words literally.

lara - i'm in the same boat as you. broke, broke, broke! i guess the millions will start pouring in once i get my graduate degree, right? bwahahahaha!

seriously though, she didn't say i have to GO to vegas to see the show, but i really do feel that her words are really clear: "Get your tickets today for her spectacular production, 'Cher at the Colosseum.'" in a sick way, part of me feels like i need to do this to completely show my commitment to the project. if i "interpret" my way out of this, i think i'll lose credibility and probably feel like i've done less that 100%. do i want to buy the tickets? no. but i'm leaning toward mkc's input.

i actually would really like to see the cher show! if i had any interest in going to vegas, i'd consider it. but, i'm really not all that partial to debuachery, gambling, and hookers, so the city doesn't appeal to me that much.

garsy! you ARE the voice of practicality and you ARE so welcome here. i know my decisions must make you crazy :) but i love hearing your P.O.V. don't stop!

i also am under the gun with my decision - oprah did say to get tickets "today" so if i go through with this, it'll be before the clock strikes midnight.

my parents are coming to visit me, to celebrate the end of my grad school process and to come see a presentation i've giving. i'm going to talk with them about this. they're on their way to my home from the airport right now. garsy, my guess is that my mom will probably side with you, and mkc, my dad will lean in your direction!

i'll let you know all about it tomorrow.

hahahaha! ylimes7, hilarious. you have made a good point. she did say "get" my tickets today...she didn't say "buy" my tickets today.

my husband thinks i should buy them and then sell them immediately on craigslist or ebay under the title "Cher Tickets...Oprah Made Me Do It!!!"

oh, and jen-tas - i realize i forgot to respond to your question...i think you should totally vote in the polls. i think having non-oprah watchers is just as important as regular viewers. thanks for asking! best, LO

Buy the cheapest ticket you can and then sell it for more!

It's something like this challenge that can really make this project. How will you know if this is the path to your best life if you don't buy the tickets and go? What if it's a life-changing experience that you can't put a price on? Isn't that what you're supposed to be finding out? Let go of the worries about budget and go with Oprah's suggestion.

hey twittering - i am open to the challenge. my credit card is ready for the hit. it just seemed as if this wasn't the test. i'm kind of hoping it comes soon, though...the anticipation is tough...
