Feeling the effects

This weekend it dawned on me: my pre-Living Oprah responsibilities are taking a beating as a result of following the advice I'm being given to live my "best life." For instance, I'm finishing my thesis now in graduate school and I'm finding it challenging to devote all the time I need to it. I'm definitely staying up later to accomplish all my work and my freetime in dwindling toward non-existence.

I really do see Oprah's advice as well-intentioned. In a perfect world (in my perfect world, I don't need to make a living and can devote my time to living in a state of complete fulfillment which includes spending hours each day luxuriating in a bubble bath, but that's just me) following her suggestions would probably not be as much of a cause of stress. But, let's face it, Oprah doesn't have to do all the legwork we, in the real world, have to do in order to accomplish her recommendations. I'm guessing she doesn't have to shop for every scrap of clothing, balance her checkbook, cook meals for her family, clean her house, juggle her appointments, research the "best deals" for the perfect crisp, white shirt.

When she uses a phrase such as "you must have," I hope she understands the ramifications those words have on those who believe they'll find the happiness that seems implicit in her turn of phrase, tone and excitement. When Oprah endorses a product or activity, it all seems so simple when it comes out of her mouth. She makes it look easy. I bet if I had a staff and limitless funds, I could make it look easy, too!

All right, I can't blog all day, I have A New Earth homework to complete for tonight. No assignments on the show except to tune in or download tonight's webinar.

And on a side note, did we really watch a ventriloquist performing disco with his turtle-puppet on the show today? Or was I hallucinating from all the vitamins and flax seed I've been consuming?

Good luck with your experiment! I've noticed that alot of people are starting to say "I had an AhhHAa! moment". I heard someone say it this morning on the Today show,.. I think Oprah started it and its so annoying!

stanley - you are SO right! i've heard people say that, too. i'm trying to think of some others she's coined. i've heard people use the word "shlumpadinkas" after her show on the same topic. i wonder if there are others...
thanks for the observation!
best,
LO

Hey, a friend sent me a link to your blog today and I sat here and read your whole archive! What you're doing is fascinating and takes a good deal of commitment and energy, I'm very impressed. It's funny that I'm not at all an Oprah watcher, but you've been so reasoned and even-handed in your responses to her show that the positive things you've come away with are truly inspiring. Good luck with everything and I'll be interested to see how things go for you!

Interesting insights. I'm really interested to see your progress in this... You're right on target on the reality of living a "best life" in a "perfect world" versus the world as we live in it.

What's your master's degree in? I am in the midst of the life-consuming process of planning my upcoming wedding, so I feel you on the whole not having time to devote to finishing the master's degree. I decided to "slow down" this semester since I work full time, but sometimes I feel like not having time is just a lame excuse and I'll never really have the time I need to finish. . . so it's nice to hear from someone else struggling with balancing life and school and all the rest. So keep us updated, keep inspiring us to press on as you delve into this project!

Tiffany - good luck with the wedding planning. It made me a basket case, so I hope you rise above that! I'm getting my MFA in performance/art. Good luck balancing everything. I am sure you'll do great.

Kelly - thanks for checking in! I'm totally impressed you read the whole archive in one sitting. You must have superpowers!

LOL at the turtle comment! I sat, jaw agape, stunned that Simon Cowell or Oprah or ANYONE would recommend that guy!
