Hi all. So day 2 of my year of living oprah is going swimmingly. Today's show was a rerun, but no matter, I am taking any and all advice that comes out of Ms. Winfrey's glossed lips. Today I learned that women need to get their clothing altered to fit them. Especially their jeans. I'm a little annoyed. Sure, it'd be lovely to have everything fit me like a glove, but what working woman has the time (and the funds) to get her clothing tailored? Still, I'm game and I'll do it. Surely this tailoring will allow me to take one step closer to happiness.
I've also learned that Michael Kors pants are best for women with big butts. I have a big butt. Therefore, Michael Kors pants are best for me. Luckily, Oprah didn't insist I purchase a pair, so my wallet goes unscathed for the moment.
For those of you who cringed at the thought of the Blueberry-Oatmeal Bars (which contained pureed spinach) from the book Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld, touted by Oprah...they were...fine. Not the biggest hit at the party, but edible. I kind of liked them, actually. And the other Oprah recipes, derived from her website, were delish.
When I don't have to be creative and can simply follow the advice of Oprah, my life isn't so challenging. I'm not saying this is a good thing, I'm just saying it takes the pressure off to take risks when someone else is leading the way. I'm not generally one who follows the leader, so this is a new sensation for me. And it's...not. so. bad. Hm.
By the by, I am particularly interested in gathering some readers who watch Oprah regularly. I'd love to have feedback from this demographic as well. Please do pass this site along to anyone you know who might appreciate the project, but additionally, to those who are Rah! Rah! Oprah Fans!
Thanks all and have a lovely day.

So I watched some of Oprah yesterday too. My question now is will you listen to what the people on her show say also, if she has them on her show then does she do everything they tell her? The woman talking about what to wear, hiding panty lines and big butts had a lot to say and Oprah seemed to like her. Now are you going to follow what she said or only what Oprah agrees on. Also, I had a thought on how to save some $$$ during this adventure. You could go to high end consignment shops or ebay to find the expensive items she insists on. Also, she didn't say who has to tailor your clothes so maybe a school that is teaching fashion or something could help with that...until the next episode :)
Hi there. I got this website from a friend of yours and I am totally intrigued by your experiment. Last year I took my own challenge to simplify my life with the guidance of Real Simple. Some worked, some fell by the wayside. I will definitely keep up with you regarding your journey.
A suggestion for the Michael Kors pants...try places like TJ Max or Nordstrom Rack or Marshalls. I'm almost positive they carry them.
And I really like the Deceptively Delicious book. I can't say I'd bring anything to a party, but I would eat things myself.
Good Luck!
I just must find the jeans Oprah had fitted for her by the gal from What Not to Wear. She looked great in them and I have the exact same butt/thigh issues that Oprah has. My questions are: where can I find them, and of course, how much will they set me back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking forward to watching you and your adventure over the next year. I'll be doing my own thing up here in Northern Ontario,Canada, and checking in on you. All the best!

I also received the information on your site from a friend of mine, and am beyond intrigued. I admit to Tivo-ing Oprah daily and selectively watching those episodes featuring content of interest to me. Don't know if I can be of any help to you along the way, but, if so, I hope you'll let me know. No matter, I very much look forward to reading along as you undertake your year-long experiment.
Best wishes and Happy New Year!

I also had an issue with the whole tailoring thing. I think I resented the fact that not every item of clothing fit me perfectly in the store, so instead of buying an item that fit me almost-perfect, I would just not buy it at all. This resulted in a really scarce and boring closet, and even worse, just a general feeling of ickyness and apathy towards my self-image. So over the past few months I decided to start buying those "really cute but not completely perfect items" and bring them in to be tailored at the local dry cleaner. It's a little bit of effort and money that has really made a difference in how I feel about my body. Cute clothes that are fitted well to my body really make a difference in my confidence level. Now when I leave the house I don't feel so much like a schlub, and it makes me feel more, well, like ME! I'm interested to see how it affects your body image and confidence level and I hope you write about that.
My mother told me she watched the show, so I'm a little in-the-know.
However, Michael Kors is a horrible designer. And he's ugly. And his perfume really revs up my allergies like no other kind (well, since love's baby soft...). So, if I can outweigh "O" by any means, don't cave into Kors. Even if your butt is at stake.
hey cathy - i don't know what brand jeans Oprah was wearing...but her website has a really active message board and i'm certain you could get info there. good luck and thanks for writing!
julie - i will definitely be checking in and writing about body image and confidence level based on this project. at the moment, in this short time, i don't feel so hot. i had felt quite a bit more confident about myself before beginning the project and now i feel like my body and my appearance will be judged harshly if i don't do everything "right." but, i'm very open to this process and will track how this changes. thanks for the great personal input. much appreciated!
I am 5'4 without a model-perfect body (we'll just leave it at that). Because of that, I have quite a tough time finding clothes that fit me - petites are too short and regular are too long for starters. So I spend too much money at the tailor at my dry cleaner. Sometimes I resent the extra money I spend, but I agree with Julie that the difference having clothes that fit my body has made is well worth the cost.
Frankly, if I had an unlimited clothing budget, I would have custom-made clothes made to my body. I know friends who would hire a personal chef in a minute. I'll do my own cooking thank you. Just give me someone who makes all of my clothes.
I love this Living Oprah idea and am going to link to it on my blog! Good luck!
LMS,
i totally agree with you. i'd love to have custom clothing!! i'm going to add that instead of the personal chef, i'd like a regular housekeeper who uses only environmentally friendly products. that's my dream.

What if you slowly switched to environmentally friendly products? I really like Shaklee products (no, I don't sell them). The Basic H, for example, gets mixed with water and can be used for so much as a basic household cleaner. I find myself using much less than I would if I were using traditional cleaners.
I've also stopped using paper towels for the most part. I always have 1 roll in the house (of the recycled variety), but it takes me forever to go through them since I've made the conscious decision to use cloth towels and now keep the paper towels in the pantry. Out of sight, out of mind really does work.
