Can Oprah Change the World?

Today's show was about how we can save the planet. How can I find fault with this? It's brilliant really, Oprah's audience is mainly women and we do most of the purchasing of cleaning products, do the grocery shopping and make lifestyle choices for our households. If Oprah says recycle and the women of America commit to recycling, won't our country be a less wasteful, polluted place?

She challenged her audience to choose 1 or 2 suggestions seen on the show and implement them in their homes. I've chosen mine - we've been trying to commit to being more environmentally responsible anyhow, so we're not to strained by the adjustment:

1. No more paper or plastic bags at the grocery store. We will bring our cloth bags with us on every trip.
2. Changing light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs. This is a bit of a cheat since we've already started this process in our home.

This isn't too tough of an assignment from Oprah as I'm already committed to doing my part to reduce the footprint I leave on the planet. Although, I'm a little jealous of the studio audience who received tons of great enviro-friendly products for their home. It's expensive stuff.

On a political note, I am hoping the timing of this show, juxtaposed with the current Presidential caucus/primary schedule, might make registered voters consider each candidate's commitment to the environment.

Anyway, today I witnessed Oprah using her personal power to affect positive change on the planet and I admire that.

I would watch out for the compact flourescent bulbs. I currently have a few in my house and I just learned yesterday about a possible link between them and migraines. Since I suffer from severe migraines and have noticed an increase since I put them in 6 weeks ago, I'm not quite sure what to do (since they can't just be tossed). I think I'm going to give it another few weeks and see if my migraines stabilize themselves, but I'm a bit wary.

Here's the link from CNN:

oy! that's good to know. i have several friends susceptible to migraines and i'd have to make their visits uncomfortable. do you know of any alternatives? thanks!

I don't know of any alternatives. What I've done for now is to relocate 2 of my compact flourescents to the outside lights at my front door and place the other 2 into lesser used lights outside of my home office (where I spend most of my day since I work from home). I'm hopeful that my migraines will even themselves out now that I've relocated my bulbs so I can continue to use them.

No more paper napkins for me. Cloth all the way.
